Sri Lanka is a year-round destination

Sri Lanka has two monsoons that affect different parts of the island at different times. That means there is almost always a region with good weather — the trick is to build your route around it.

The south-west monsoon brings rain to the west coast, south coast and hill country from roughly May to September. The north-east monsoon affects the east coast and north from roughly October to January.

December to April

The classic season for most first trips. The south and west coasts are at their best, the hill country is clear and the Cultural Triangle is pleasant. It is also the best time for whale watching off Mirissa.

May to September

The east coast comes into its own, with calm seas around Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay. The Cultural Triangle stays mostly dry, and the elephant gathering at Minneriya builds from July. Tea country and Ella can see showers, but are still very enjoyable.

October and November

An inter-monsoon period with afternoon showers across much of the island. Travel is still possible and quieter, with a carefully planned route and flexible days.
