Yala National Park
Sri Lanka's most famous park, known for one of the highest leopard densities in the world. Also elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and excellent birdlife. It can be busy, so we plan early-morning drives and quieter blocks where possible. Parts of the park usually close for a period around September and October.
Udawalawe National Park
The most reliable park for elephants, with open grasslands that make them easy to see. A great choice for families and for routes between Ella and the south coast.
Yala vs Udawalawe
Choose Yala if leopards are a priority and you are happy with a busier park. Choose Udawalawe for guaranteed elephant sightings in a calmer setting. With enough time, many travellers enjoy both.
Wilpattu and Minneriya
Wilpattu is large, wild and quiet, with leopards and sloth bears among natural lakes — ideal for patient wildlife lovers. Minneriya and Kaudulla, near Sigiriya, host the famous elephant gathering, which usually peaks from July to October.
