The short answer: it depends on your month
From December to April, choose the south coast. From May to September, choose the east coast. In the shoulder months, we help you pick based on the latest conditions.
South coast
More developed, with a wide choice of boutique hotels, villas and restaurants. Easy to combine with Galle Fort, whale watching in Mirissa and a safari in Yala or Udawalawe.
- Best for: variety, dining, Galle Fort, whale watching
- Main areas: Bentota, Galle, Mirissa, Tangalle
East coast
Quieter and more relaxed, with long sandy beaches, calm water in season and a strong local character. Arugam Bay is a surfing hub, while Trincomalee and Pasikudah suit families and couples.
- Best for: calm seas, snorkelling, fewer crowds
- Main areas: Trincomalee, Nilaveli, Pasikudah, Arugam Bay
